William A. Young, DA, Associate Director of International Programs and Lecturer in History, Department of International Programs, UND College of Arts & Sciences
Dr. Young earned his doctoral degree in International History from the University of North Dakota. He specializes in Early Modern and Modern Europe, concentrating on the history of international relations and warfare. Dr. Young also holds a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Southern California-United Kingdom Program (where he studied at Cambridge, England). His second master’s degree is in History. Dr. Young completed two bachelor's degrees (one in History and the other in Government and Politics) while studying at the University of Maryland-European Division in Germany, Britain, and The Netherlands.
Dr. Young served as a historian for 15 of his 22 years in the United States Air Force. His military assignments included 13 years in Germany, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia. He is the author of numerous Air Force studies, and a three-time recipient of the Air Force Historian of the Year Award. He is currently working on a study of Air Force operations in North Dakota during the Cold War.
His fields of historical interest include international political and military history. He currently is the Associate Director of International Programs and a Lecturer in History at the University of North Dakota. He teaches courses in Western Civilization, European, United States, and Middle East History.
Professor Young is married to Patricia “Trish” Young, who works at the University of North Dakota. They have been married for more than 30 years. He likes to spend his spare time collecting and reading history books as well as attending men’s ice hockey and football games at UND.
