Graduate Certificate
New students may begin January 2010
Who Should Apply?
Instructional designers (IDers) come from all disciplines and domains. There are no undergraduate degrees in ID so you can enter the field without having a pre-required undergraduate major.
If you have a background in education, psychology, communications, or technology, you will recognize much of what you already have learned since the work you will do as an IDer is rooted in these areas.
More importantly, you should consider the skills and dispositions required of instructional designers. If you are interested in ID, you should:
- Enjoy the process of writing, as a large portion of what you will do in ID is the creation of design documents and instructional materials.
- Be interested in many subject areas, as you will be regularly called upon to develop instruction in a wide variety of areas by working with subject-matter experts in different domains.
- Possess creativity, as the development of effective training and instruction requires as much creativity as science.
- Like working with people to solve problems and improve human performance and experience.
IDT Graduate Certificate Program
The part-time, online IDT Graduate Certificate program is designed for working professionals who are unable to complete a full-time, on-campus program. The IDT Graduate Certificate will enhance your skills in instructional design and technology and move your current career in a new direction.
Depending on your career goals, two Graduate Certificates are available:
- K-12 Technology Integration - focuses on integrating technology into instruction and the skills associated with the use of technology in the classroom
- Corporate Training & Performance - highlights the use of technology to support curriculum for business, government, or industry
The Graduate Certificate is designed for those who do not need or want a full IDT master’s program, but who want documentation of their skills in instructional design and technology. This option provides minimum competency in the field of instructional design, but is not designed to result in fully qualified instructional designers.
Admission Requirements: IDT Graduate Certificate
To be admitted to the IDT Graduate Certificate Program, you must have:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a field of study in the area or discipline appropriate to the field in which you intend to work.
- A cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or above.
- A basic knowledge of the microcomputer and substantial skill in using standard applications to produce work projects (word processing, database, spreadsheet, drawing/painting, graphing and other common applications).
If you do not meet the admission standards, you may be admitted on a provisional basis with continued enrollment contingent on successful performance in the program.
