FAQ's

Do distance students follow the same curriculum as on-campus students?

Yes! UND’s online courses and distance learning programs mirror those offered on-campus. In general, as a distance student, you will follow the same curriculum, experience similar lectures, and have comparable deadlines for completing assignments and exams as on-campus students.

Your transcript and diploma will look the same as for a student who graduated from UND by taking traditional, on-campus courses.

Do I have to take admissions tests to be admitted to the UND School of Graduate Studies?

The answer depends on the graduate program and if English is your native language.

Non-Native Speakers of English

If English is not your native language, you must complete the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) prior to admission. If you have received a bachelor’s degree or higher from the United States or English-speaking Canada, you are not required to fulfill the English test requirement.

Graduate Certificate Programs

In general, if you are applying to a Graduate Certificate Program, you do not need to complete an admissions test.

Master’s or Doctoral Programs

If you are applying to a Master’s or Doctoral Program, you may be required to take an admissions test such as the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test).

Please refer to the UND School of Graduate Studies for Admissions Information and a complete list of Tests Required for Admission.

Can I use financial aid for online courses?

Yes. Semester-based, online courses are eligible for most federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs.

Semester-based, online courses are NOT eligible for any tuition waiver programs at the University of North Dakota (i.e., Cultural Diversity, International, Employee, Graduate), except as required by statute.

In order to be eligible for federal financial aid, you must be:

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the only application UND requires to determine eligibility for all federal and state financial aid. Refer to the UND Student Financial Aid Office for more information.

When do I register for courses?

Fall Semester – Early April

Spring Semester – Early November

Summer Semester – Early April

How long will it take to complete my doctoral degree in Educational Leadership?

You will complete 38 months of continuous coursework. Typically, you will begin your dissertation after you have completed all of your coursework.

The time it will take you to complete your doctoral degree will also depend on your educational background. You may be required to take additional courses offered outside of the cohort to meet the degree requirements. Pending approval, you also may be able to transfer a maximum of 30 credits from your master's degree to the doctoral program.
