How Online Degrees Work
You can earn your master’s degree from UND while you continue to work. The entire Master of Science in in Elementary Education program is offered online; you are not required to come to campus at any time.
Opportunities for "Live" Web Classes
Depending on your instructor's preferences, some online courses may have opportunities for class discussions or chat sessions that are conducted “live” over the Internet. In these “live” online classes, you may:
- participate in "live" class discussions or chat sessions, which are held at set times that are convenient for most students.
- interact with your instructors and other students using Web-conferencing technology.
- see your instructors’ materials as though you were sitting in a classroom on the UND campus.
In this manner, the class lectures, discussion, and collaboration are conducted in a very similar fashion to traditional on-campus classes.
Plus, if you miss a class, you may review the recorded class lectures and discussions that are accessed through the Internet at any time.
Interact in a Virtual Classroom
As an online student, you will also participate in many online class activities at the time and place of your choice. You will use Web-based tools to:
- access course materials
- submit assignments
- communicate through message boards
- participate in discussions through threaded discussion tools
- receive your grades
Field-Based Practicum Near Your Local Community
You will be required to participate in a 3-credit, supervised practicum in an elementary school setting for a total of 90 hours. You may work at a school within your area.
You will be responsible for finding an approved practicum site and the individual who will supervise you. If you are currently teaching, you may complete the practicum in your own grade K-6 classroom if it meets UND's accreditation requirements. Standard 4 - Diversity of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education states that:
"Field experiences or clinical practice for both conventional and distance learning programs provide experiences with male and female P–12 students from different socioeconomic groups and at least two ethnic/racial groups. Candidates also work with English language learners and students with disabilities during some of their field experiences and/or clinical practice to develop and practice their knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions for working with all students. Feedback from peers and supervisors helps candidates reflect on their ability to help all students learn."
Your supervisor may be an administrator, education coordinator, or another individual physically located at your practicum site. Your supervisor does not need to be in your classroom on a regular basis if you have previously taught in a grade K-6 classroom.
