Advising & Admission for Distance Engineering Degree Programs

After you are officially admitted to The University of North Dakota with a declared major of Engineering (see above), you must complete Steps 1 - 3 before an advisor will be available to assist you with course selection:

Step 1: After you have been officially admitted, the UND Registrar’s Office will evaluate your college transcripts (as applicable) to determine which courses will transfer to UND.

Step 2: After the initial evaluation is completed, the relevant Engineering Department will evaluate applicable college transcripts to determine if the transferred credits will apply to your specific degree program. Some credits that are accepted by UND may not satisfy the requirements for your major.

To facilitate the evaluation, please submit official course descriptions and/or syllabi (from the semester taken) for any Math, Science, or Engineering courses to:

Janet Honek
UND College of Engineering & Mines
243 Centennial Drive, Stop 8155
Grand Forks, ND 58202-8155

Fax: 701.777.2236
E-mail: janet.honek@engr.UND.edu

Please note that transfer credit will not be considered until these materials have been received. The evaluation process takes 4 to 8 weeks or possibly longer depending on the number of courses being evaluated, so plan accordingly.

Step 3: To determine your placement in math courses at UND, you have the following options: 1) use your ACT or SAT score, 2) complete the COMPASS Math Placement Exam, or 3) work with the UND Mathematics Department to get previously taken math courses evaluated for transfer course equivalency.

Step 4: Once ALL of the above steps have been completed, you will receive a degree requirement status sheet and an advisor will assist you with your course selection. You will not be able to register for classes until you have met with your advisor (via phone or e-mail).

NOTE: If you applied to UND less than 4 weeks prior to the start of a semester, you most likely will not be able to register for any semester-based courses for your first semester. You may be able to register for online “Enroll Anytime” courses (not eligible for financial aid) to complete UND’s Essential Studies (general education) course requirements.

Step 5: Prior to taking upper division (300 level or above) engineering courses, you must be admitted to the professional engineering degree program at the UND College of Engineering & Mines. Your advisor will assist you with this separate application process (not required for Chemical Engineering majors). Refer to Apply to Professional Degree Programs for more information.
