Faculty Spotlight

Douglas Munski, PhD, Professor, Geography Department, UND College of Arts & Sciences

Dr. Munski joined the faculty at the University of North Dakota in 1978 as a visiting assistant professor, upon completing his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He rose through the ranks to become an assistant professor, an associate professor, and now a professor. A tenured member of the Department of Geography, Dr. Munski is a past department chairperson and an active member of the academic advising team at the University of North Dakota.

Dr. Munski is a longtime instructor of independent study and online, semester-based courses offered through the University of North Dakota. Since the early 1980s, he has been responsible for courses in human geography, world regional geography, geographic education methods, and the geography of Canada.

“I’m excited about geography, and want to help others become better geographers than I am,” he says. “I take delight when students exceed me.”

“It really is a privilege to help shape the next generation,” Dr. Munski says. “I hope that students, after taking my class, remember that they can make a difference in how the world operates.”

Dr. Munski is frequently assisted in grading lessons by a special team of assistants. Presently, an elderly chocolate tabby/Siamese shorthair is putting her “paws of approval” on geography papers. Be warned, however, that sprinkling tuna juice and catnip treats on assignments will not help raise a grade!
